Middle School Science Students Work on Projects to Design, Build

Eighth-grade science students at Washington Middle School have been learning about concepts in physical science.

In Melissa Ziegler’s science class, students are applying their knowledge of momentum, energy, and Newton's Laws of Motion to design and build a crash worthy vehicle for a raw egg.

Students have specific constraints like width, size, and mass for their vehicles. When the cars are tested, students will be required to calculate their speed and check the condition of their egg after each crash. This project combines both science and engineering standards.

Pictures below are of the students in the building and testing stage of the process.

Science teachers Travis Tompson and Madison Darnell are doing similar projects with their eighth-grade students, but slightly different.
